Themes in "Home"

One of the themes that I notice in the novel is generosity. Frank har escaped a mental hospital and the first man he meets invites him in and gives him clothes, food and even money. One would expect the man to be afraid of the stranger and send him away, but he is not afraid and gives Frank a helping hand. This shows great generosity. Later in the novel Frank meet another man who shows similar hospitality. The two meet at a cafe, and the man invites Frank home to his wife and children after only a short conversation. The man, Billy, understands that Frank needs a place to stay overnight and offers him to stay. I believe therefor that generosity is a central theme in the novel.

Language in "Home"

The language in the novel is diverse. Parts of the novel is formal with  descriptios of observations done by Frank on his travel south. An example of this is "Out in the street in front of the bus the sun hurt him" (p.24).  There is also informal dialogue in the novel such as "We ate it" and "Get out" (p 29). These are short phrases and the language is very direct.

Narrator

The narrator in the novel is Frank Money. Her tells his story in a third person point of view. In the beginning he is referred to as "he", and later through a conversation we get to know his name. The narrator is limited as we only experience the story through his perspective. We follow his actions and also his thoughts. He seems like a reliable narrator.

A summary of an event

In the novel "Home" by Toni Morrison we meet a man called Frank Money. He is a patient at a mental hospital. He manages to escape without any shoes on, and finds a house where he knocks on a door. A man named Reverend Locke opens the door and lets him in. Although Reverend Locke knows that Frank has escaped the hospital he gives him food, hot drink and clothes. He even allows him to sleep for some hours. Towards the end of the chapter Locke gives him money to buy a bus ticket so that he can escape south.
